Who is Goddess Saraswati?
Saraswati (सरस्वती) is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, learning, language, music, arts, and wisdom. She is the shakti (power) of Brahma, the Creator, and is considered the source of all creative and intellectual power in the universe. The Rigveda — one of the world's oldest texts — describes her both as a sacred river and as a divine power. The name Saraswati literally means "she who flows" (saras = flow, essence; vati = she who possesses).
When is Saraswati Puja performed?
Saraswati Puja (also called Vasant Panchami) is performed on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha (January-February). It celebrates the arrival of spring and the beginning of new learning. On this day, students traditionally place their books and instruments before the goddess. In West Bengal, the festival is especially elaborate, with large clay idols of Saraswati installed in schools and homes.
What is Saraswati's vahana (vehicle)?
Saraswati's vahana is the hamsa (हंस — the swan or goose). The hamsa is the symbol of discrimination (viveka) — the ability to separate milk from water, or truth from falsehood. Just as the swan is said to drink only milk from a mixture of milk and water, the seeker of knowledge must separate truth from illusion. Some traditions describe her peacock — representing beauty and grace — as an alternate vehicle.
What are the four arms of Saraswati's image?
Saraswati is depicted with four arms: (1) Veena (vīṇā) — representing mastery of all arts and music; (2) Vedas (pustaka) — representing knowledge and sacred scriptures; (3) Mala (japa-mala) — representing meditation and spiritual practice; (4) Kamandalu or Amrita pot — representing sacred water and divine grace. She is clothed in white, seated on a white lotus — white throughout symbolising the purity of true knowledge.
