Sanskrit Meaning of Durga (दुर्गा)

दुर्
Dur
difficult, inaccessible
+
गा
Gā
to go, to reach

Durga = “She who is impossible to reach/overcome.” Evil cannot approach or defeat her. She is also called Mahishasura Mardini (Mahisha = buffalo, Asura = demon, Mardini = crusher) — the goddess who slew the buffalo-demon Mahishasura after an 18-day battle that none of the male gods could win.

The Story of Durga and Mahishasura

Mahishasura (the buffalo-demon) performed intense tapas and won a boon from Brahma: “No god, demon, or man shall be able to kill me.” Armed with this protection, he conquered the three worlds and expelled the gods from heaven.

The gods — Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva — were powerless. In their desperation, each god directed his inner Shakti (energy) outward. These divine energies merged and took the form of a blazing woman — Durga. Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu his Sudarshana Chakra, Indra his thunderbolt. She rode a lion into battle.

Mahishasura kept changing form — lion, elephant, buffalo — but Durga matched every form. After 18 days of battle, Durga pinned the buffalo to the ground with her foot, drove her trident through Mahishasura, and beheaded him. The gods rejoiced. This is the victory celebrated as Vijayadashami — the tenth day of victory.

In Bengal, the story adds a layer: Durga is also Parvati, Shiva's wife, returning to her parents' home (earth) for five days with her children — Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartikeya, and Ganesha. Vijaya Dashami is the tearful farewell as she returns to Kailash. This is why Bengalis cry at Bisarjan (immersion).

Durga Puja Mantras — Sanskrit with Meaning

Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu (most famous)
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
yā devī sarva-bhūteṣu śakti-rūpeṇa saṃsthitā | namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ ||
"That goddess who dwells in all living beings as the power of Shakti — to her I bow, to her I bow, to her I bow." From Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana). The verse repeats for Buddhi (intellect), Nidra (sleep), Bhukti (hunger), Chetana (consciousness) — affirming the goddess is present in every force of nature and life.
Sarva Mangala Mangalye (invocation)
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके। शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥
sarva-maṅgala-māṅgalye śive sarvārtha-sādhike | śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stu te ||
"Auspiciousness of all auspicious things, Shiva's consort, fulfiller of all purposes, refuge of all, three-eyed Gauri, Narayani — I bow to you." Sung at the start of Durga Puja. Nārāyaṇī = feminine form of Narayana — affirming Durga is the Shakti of Vishnu as much as Shiva.
Mahishasura Mardini bija mantra
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे
Om Aiṃ Hrīṃ Klīṃ Cāmuṇḍāyai Vicce
Aiṃ = bija of Saraswati (knowledge), Hrīṃ = bija of Lakshmi (energy), Klīṃ = bija of Kali (power), Cāmuṇḍāyai = to Chamunda (Durga who slew Chanda and Munda demons), Vicce = a protective seed syllable. Chanted 108 times during Sandhi Puja on Ashtami.

Durga Puja 2026 — FAQ

Is Durga Puja the same as Navratri?

They overlap but are distinct. Navratri is observed across India for 9 nights worshipping the Navadurga. Durga Puja is the Bengali/Eastern India version — a 5-day public festival (Shashthi to Dashami) with elaborate clay idols, pandals, and community celebrations. Both end on Vijayadashami.

Why is Vijaya Dashami the same day as Diwali eve in 2026?

In 2026, Vijaya Dashami falls on Oct 29 and Diwali is also Oct 29 — they coincide. This is because Diwali is on Amavasya of Kartik month and Vijayadashami is on Dashami of Ashwin month. In some years they come very close; in 2026 they fall on the same day.

What is Sindoor Khela?

Sindoor Khela (সিঁদুর খেলা) is a Bengali Durga Puja tradition on Vijaya Dashami — married women apply sindoor (vermilion) to the feet of Durga, then to each other's foreheads and parting. It is a celebration of marriage, fertility, and womanhood, and a farewell to the goddess.
