Why Is Ganesha Worshipped First? The Sanskrit Story of Prathamapujya

प्रथमपूज्य (Prathamapūjya)

Prathama (प्रथम) = first, foremost — from √prath (to spread, to be foremost). Pūjya (पूज्य) = worthy of worship — from √pūj (to worship, to honour). The First-Worthy-of-Worship. This is Ganesha's title before all other names.

The Story: The Race Around the World

The gods came to Shiva and Parvati with a dispute: which of their two sons — Kartikeya (कार्तिकेय) or Ganesha (गणेश) — should have the honour of being worshipped first in all pujas, in all rituals, in all undertakings of the cosmos?

Shiva proposed a contest: "Whoever circles all the worlds three times first shall receive the honour of first worship."

Kartikeya — young, swift, riding his peacock — immediately set off at divine speed, circumnavigating the fourteen worlds. He was confident.

Ganesha — large-bodied, riding a mouse — did not move immediately. He paused. He thought. Then, he walked calmly to where his parents Shiva and Parvati were seated, circumambulated them three times with complete devotion, bowed, and stood still.

When Kartikeya returned from his cosmic journey, he found Ganesha already declared the winner. He was furious. How?

Shiva spoke: "The Vedas say that circumambulating one's parents is equal to circumambulating all the worlds. For a child who truly understands, the entire cosmos is contained within the mother and father. Ganesha understood this. He has circled all worlds — not by speed, but by wisdom."

The Sanskrit Philosophy Within the Story

Pradakṣiṇā (प्रदक्षिणा) — Circumambulation

From pra (forward) + dakṣiṇa (right, south, skilled). Circumambulation always moves clockwise, keeping the sacred object to one's right. In Sanskrit cosmology, the right side is auspicious, the direction of the rising sun. Ganesha's pradakṣiṇā of his parents was not a metaphor: in Vedic understanding, the parents ARE the world. The Manusmṛti says: "The mother is worth a thousand fathers in dignity and power."

Why Intelligence Beats Speed

The contest is the Mahabharata in miniature: brute capability (Kartikeya's speed) vs. wisdom-applied (Ganesha's insight). The same question runs through the Bhagavad Gita: what is the highest form of action? Not the fastest or strongest, but the wisest. Ganesha won not despite moving slowly but because he understood what the question was actually asking.

The Mouse (Mūṣaka — मूषक)

Ganesha's vehicle is a mouse — the smallest, most humble creature, representing the ego. Ganesha, vast as the cosmos, rides upon a tiny ego. The mouse also represents the gnawing quality of thought — the intellect that gnaws through every obstacle to find the core. Ganesha controls and rides his own mind, rather than being carried away by it.

The Vedic Sanction: Rigveda on Ganesha

Rigveda 2.23.1 (also found as the Ganapati hymn)

"We invoke you, O Ganapati, the lord of all groups — the wisest among the wise, the most celebrated, the eldest king of sacred formulas. Hear us, O Brahmanaspati, and come sit in our sacred space with your blessings."

This Rigvedic verse, among the oldest in human literature, already establishes Ganapati as jyeṣṭha-rāja (eldest king) — the one who presides over all sacred beginnings. The tradition of worshipping Ganesha first is not later mythology; it is as old as the Vedas themselves.
