Indus Valley Civilisation:
The Ancient World's Most Advanced Urban Culture

From 3300 to 1300 BCE, a civilisation flourished in the Indian subcontinent that was, by land area, the largest in the ancient world — larger than Egypt and Mesopotamia combined. It covered approximately 1.25 million square kilometres, encompassing parts of present-day India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

It built planned cities with underground sewage systems, standardised weights and measures, a writing system, maritime trade networks reaching Mesopotamia, and agricultural practices that included the world's first known cultivation of cotton. At its height, it may have had a population of five million people.

Discovered by European archaeologists in the 1920s, it rewrote the history of human civilisation. It is not a peripheral footnote — it is one of the three foundational civilisations of the ancient world, alongside Egypt and Mesopotamia, and in several technical respects it surpassed them.

Six Achievements That Redefine Ancient India

Planned cities with grid layouts — in 2600 BCE

Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were built on precise grid plans, with streets running north-south and east-west. Buildings were constructed from standardised kiln-fired bricks in a ratio of 1:2:4 — the same ratio used in modern construction. No other ancient civilisation built cities with this level of urban planning until Roman times, 2,500 years later.

Underground drainage and sewage systems

Every home in Mohenjo-daro had access to covered drains that connected to city-wide underground sewage channels — a municipal sanitation system. London did not have comparable underground sewage infrastructure until 1865 CE. The gap: approximately 4,400 years.

Standardised weights accurate to 1/16th of a unit

Harappan weights follow a precise binary system: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 160, 200, 320, 640... They are so standardised that identical weights have been found across sites 1,500 km apart — evidence of a unified system of trade measurement across the entire civilisation.

Lothal: the world's oldest known dock

Excavated at Lothal, Gujarat, a brick-lined dock (218m × 36m) dated to approximately 2400 BCE is the oldest known artificial dock in the world. It connected to the Sabarmati river and served oceangoing trade with Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf. India had maritime trade infrastructure before most civilisations had cities.

Advanced agriculture and irrigation

Harappans cultivated wheat, barley, cotton (the first known cultivation of cotton in the world), rice, sesame, mustard, and field peas. They built irrigation channels and dams. The world's first known cultivation of cotton — Gossypium arboreum — was in the Indus Valley.

The world's earliest known ruler — accurate to 1.7mm

A ruler found at Lothal, dating to 2400 BCE, is divided into units of approximately 1.704mm. It is the earliest known measuring scale in human history, and its accuracy is comparable to modern precision instruments. Multiples of this unit match brick sizes found across the entire civilisation.

The Undeciphered Script

The Indus script — found on over 4,000 seals, tablets, and objects — has not been deciphered. Approximately 400 distinct signs have been identified. Despite decades of effort by linguists, computer scientists, and archaeologists worldwide, no consensus has been reached on what language it represents or what the inscriptions say.

This means that the Indus Valley Civilisation — the largest ancient civilisation on Earth — has not yet spoken to us in its own words. What we know comes entirely from archaeology: the objects, the cities, the weights, the seals. The full story is still waiting to be read.
