Mapped the Sky 3,000 Years Ago
The oldest astronomical text in the world is the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa, dated to approximately 1400–1200 BCE. It tracks the positions of the Sun and Moon for ritual purposes — and in doing so, demonstrates a level of positional astronomy that would not appear in Europe for another thousand years.
What followed — through Āryabhaṭa, Brahmagupta, Bhāskara, and the Kerala School — was a continuous tradition of astronomical inquiry, mathematical precision, and scientific reasoning that produced results comparable to, and in several cases superior to, the best astronomy of any civilisation in the pre-telescopic world.
Five Discoveries That Changed How We Understand Ancient India
Earth rotates on its axis
Āryabhaṭa stated in the Āryabhaṭīya that the apparent motion of stars is caused by Earth's rotation — not the stars moving around Earth. This was 1,050 years before Copernicus published the same conclusion in 1543 CE.

Solar year: 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, 30 seconds
Āryabhaṭa's value for the sidereal year was 365.2588 days. The modern value is 365.2563 days. His error: 0.0025 days — 3 minutes and 20 seconds — achieved with naked-eye observation alone.

Correct explanation of lunar and solar eclipses
Āryabhaṭa stated that eclipses are caused by Earth's and Moon's shadows — not by Rāhu and Ketu, as mythological accounts suggested. This was a scientific correction of a popular belief, published in Sanskrit verse in 499 CE.

Gravity as attraction toward Earth's centre
Brahmagupta wrote: "Bodies fall toward the Earth as it is in the nature of the Earth to attract bodies, just as it is in the nature of water to flow downward." This is a statement of gravitational attraction — 1,000 years before Newton.

Earth's circumference calculated as 4,967 yojanas
Converting Bhāskara's unit, this gives approximately 39,736 km. The modern value is 40,075 km. His error: less than 1%. He did this without satellites, without GPS, using only mathematics and shadow measurements.

The 27 Nakshatras — India's Lunar Mansion System
Ancient Indian astronomers divided the sky into 27 nakshatras — lunar mansions marking the Moon's approximate daily position as it orbits Earth. This system, described in the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa and the Atharvaveda, is one of the oldest star-cataloguing systems in the world and predates the Greek zodiac.
The Kerala School: Calculus 200 Years Before Newton
The Kerala School of astronomy and mathematics (14th–16th century CE), founded by Mādhava of Saṅgamagrāma, developed infinite series expansions for trigonometric functions — the mathematical foundation of calculus — approximately 200 years before Newton and Leibniz independently arrived at the same results.
Mādhava's series for π/4 (the Leibniz formula in Western texts), his sine and cosine series — these are documented in Kerala manuscripts and have been verified by historians of mathematics at Cambridge, Edinburgh, and the London Mathematical Society.
