Vikramāditya and India's Golden Age:
The Gupta Empire at Its Peak

The Gupta Empire (320–550 CE) is widely considered the peak of ancient Indian civilisation — the period when India's arts, sciences, philosophy, and governance achieved their highest classical expression simultaneously. At the centre of this golden age was Chandragupta II, who adopted the legendary title Vikramāditya — "sun of valour."

Under Vikramāditya's patronage, Kālidāsa composed Shakuntala and Meghadūtam. Āryabhaṭa computed the value of π, described the heliocentric model, and tabulated the world's first sine table. Varāhamihira produced his encyclopedic Bṛhat Saṃhitā. The Ajanta cave paintings reached their greatest technical achievement. The iron pillar of Delhi — which has stood rust-free for 1,600 years — was likely cast during this period.

Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Faxian, who visited India during Vikramāditya's reign (c. 399–414 CE), wrote that the cities were prosperous, the people were free, crime was rare, capital punishment was not practised, and the roads were safe. His account is an independent external validation of the Gupta period's quality of governance.

"The people are numerous and happy... There is no royal punishment by death... Throughout the whole country no one kills any living being, nor drinks wine, nor eats onions or garlic... The people are rich and prosperous, and vie with one another in the practice of benevolence and righteousness."

The Nine Gems (Navaratna) of Vikramāditya's Court

Tradition identifies nine scholars who adorned Vikramāditya's court — the Navaratna (nine jewels). While some names are debated historically, the tradition reflects the genuine density of intellectual achievement at the Gupta court:

The Iron Pillar of Delhi

The iron pillar in Qutb Minar complex, Delhi, is approximately 7 metres tall and weighs over 6 tonnes. It has been standing in the open air for approximately 1,600 years and shows no significant rusting. Modern metallurgical analysis has found that the pillar was manufactured using a paste-iron forging process that produced a thin layer of misawite (iron, oxygen, and hydrogen compound) on the surface — a natural protective coating that even today's metallurgists struggle to replicate with modern techniques.
