The Hungry Jackal Runs for His Life

वने एकः शृगालः वसति स्म। तस्य नाम चन्दकः। एकदा वने किञ्चिदपि न लभते — चन्दकः बहु क्षुधितः अभवत्। "नगरे गच्छामि!" इति सः निश्चितवान्। नगरे बहवः श्वानाः आसन्। ते चन्दकम् दृष्ट्वा "भौ! भौ! भौ!" इति अकथयन् और तम् अधावन्। चन्दकः भयेन इतस्ततः अधावत् — प्राणरक्षणाय!

In the forest lived a jackal named Chandaka. One day, he could find absolutely nothing to eat — Chandaka was starving. "I will go to the city!" he decided. In the city, there were many dogs. Seeing Chandaka, they barked "Bow! Bow! Bow!" and gave chase. Chandaka ran here and there in terror — running for his life!
