Born in Holy Varanasi
वाराणसीनगरे, गङ्गातटे, मोरोपन्तः तम्बे वसति स्म। तस्य पत्नी भागीरथीबाई गुणवती, साहसिनी च आसीत्। कार्तिकमासस्य शुक्लपक्षे एका कन्या जाता। माता अवदत् — "इयं मणिकर्णिका — गङ्गायाः कर्णाभरणम् इव।" गृहे सर्वत्र आनन्दः अभवत्।
In the city of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga, Moropant Tambe lived. His wife Bhagirathi Bai was virtuous and courageous. In the bright fortnight of the month of Kartika, a daughter was born. The mother said — "She is Manikarnika — like an earring of the Ganga." Everywhere in the house there was joy.
