शब्देन प्रथमम् युद्धं करणीयम् — पश्चात् शस्त्रेण।

Śabdena prathamam yuddhaṃ karaṇīyam — paścāt śastreṇa.

The battle must first be fought with words — then, if needed, with weapons.

The Queen Writes Her Case

लक्ष्मीबाई ब्रिटिश-अधिवक्तारम् जॉन-लॉङ्गम् आहूय अवदत् — "अस्माकम् दत्तकग्रहणम् ब्रिटिश-अधिकारिणां समक्षे अभवत्।" "तर्हि अयम् न्याय्यः — लन्दन-महाराज्ञ्याः सभायाम् निवेदयाम।" जॉन-लॉङ्गः निवेदनपत्रम् लिखित्वा प्रेषयत्। राज्ञी धैर्येण प्रतिक्षणं प्रतीक्षत।

Lakshmibai summoned the British lawyer John Lang and said — "Our adoption took place in the presence of British officers." "Therefore it is lawful — let us petition the Privy Council of the British Queen in London." John Lang wrote the petition and sent it. The queen waited patiently at every moment.
