सत्यवतः दोषारोपणम् अपमानम् — न तस्य पराजयः।

Satyavataḥ doṣāropaṇam apamānam — na tasya parājayaḥ.

Falsely blaming a truthful person is their insult — not their defeat.

The Spark at Meerut

मई १८५७ वर्षे मेरठनगरे भारतीय सैनिकाः विद्रोहम् अकुर्वन्। "विदेशीनां दासत्वम् न स्वीकर्तव्यम्!" इति घोषणा। सैनिकाः दिल्लीम् आगत्य बहादुर-शाह-ज़फर-महाराजम् नेतारूपेण स्वीकृतवन्तः। भारते सर्वत्र विद्रोहस्य अग्निः प्रज्वलितः। झाँसीजनाः समाचारं श्रुत्वा अचिन्तयन् — "अधुना किम् करणीयम्?"

In May 1857, Indian soldiers in Meerut revolted. "The slavery of foreigners must not be accepted!" — this was the declaration. The soldiers came to Delhi and accepted Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader. Across India, the fire of uprising blazed. The people of Jhansi, hearing the news, wondered — "What must be done now?"
