अर्जुनस्य दिव्यास्त्रयात्रा

The Departure for Divine Weapons
वनवासकाले पाण्डवाः शस्त्रहीनाः आसन्। महर्षिः व्यासः युधिष्ठिरम् उपदिशत् — "युद्धं भविष्यति — दिव्यास्त्राणि आवश्यकानि। अर्जुनः एकाकी तपः कृत्वा देवेभ्यः अस्त्राणि आनयतु।" युधिष्ठिरः सहमतः — अर्जुनः विदायम् अयाचत। अर्जुनः हिमालयं प्रति प्रस्थितः — एकाकी। वर्षाणि यावत् तपः अकरोत् — पञ्चाग्निमध्ये। इन्द्रः प्रकटितः — "वत्स! अहं तव पिता। किम् इच्छसि?" "भगवन्! सर्वाणि दिव्यास्त्राणि देहि।" "प्रथमम् महेश्वरम् प्रसादय।" इन्द्रः अवदत्।
During the forest exile, the Pandavas were without powerful weapons. The great sage Vyasa counselled Yudhishthira: "A war is coming — divine weapons will be essential. Let Arjuna go alone, perform austerities, and bring weapons from the gods." Yudhishthira agreed — Arjuna sought everyone's leave. Arjuna set out toward the Himalayas — alone. For years he performed intense austerities — standing in the midst of five fires. Indra appeared: "Child! I am your father. What do you desire?" "Lord! Give me all the divine weapons." "First, propitiate Maheshvara." said Indra.
