Five Disguises in Virata's Court
The thirteenth year — the year of living in disguise. The rule was: if discovered — twelve more years in the forest. The Pandavas went to the kingdom of Virata, king of the Matsya country. Yudhishthira became "Kanka" — a teacher of dice games. Bhima became "Vallabha" — a cook in the royal kitchen. Arjuna became "Brihannala" — a teacher of dance. Nakula became a horse-keeper — Sahadeva a cowherd. Draupadi became "Sairandhri" — a lady's maid to the queen. Thus six people — in secret disguise — lived out the year.
