The Golden Deer

एकदा पञ्चवट्याम् एकः मृगः आगतः। सः स्वर्णवर्णः आसीत् — अतीव सुन्दरः। सः मारीचः नाम राक्षसः — मायामृगरूपेण। सीता मृगं दृष्ट्वा अवदत् — "रामः! एतं मृगम् आनय।" रामः धनुषं गृहीत्वा मृगम् अन्वगच्छत्।

One day in Pañcavaṭī a deer appeared. He was golden-coloured — extremely beautiful. He was the demon Mārīca — in the form of a magic deer. Sītā, seeing the deer, said — "Rāma! Bring this deer." Rāma, taking his bow, went after the deer.
