dharma

Righteous duty; the moral order that sustains the universe

From the root dhṛ (धृ) — to hold, to uphold. That which holds the cosmos together.

धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः — Dharma protects those who protect it.

कर्म

karma

Action; the universal law of cause and effect

From the root kṛ (कृ) — to do, to act. Karma is simply "that which is done."

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते — You have the right only to action, never to its fruits. (BG 2.47)

अहिंसा

ahiṃsā

Non-violence; causing no harm to any living being

A (not) + hiṃsā (harm). From the root han (हन्) — to strike. The practice of not striking.

अहिंसा परमो धर्मः — Non-violence is the highest dharma. (Mahābhārata)
