Ishaan

(īśāna)

Lord, ruler; one of the eight directional names of Shiva

Full Meaning

Īśāna is one of the eight directional names (aṣṭamūrtis) of Shiva — specifically the northeast direction, associated with divine wisdom and spiritual knowledge. The northeast corner (Īśāna koṇa) is considered the most sacred direction in Vāstu Śāstra — the direction of grace and clarity.

Etymology

From the root īś (ईश्) — to rule, to command, to own, to be master of. Īśāna is "the one who commands" or "the lord."

Usage in Sanskrit Texts

Shiva is called Īśāna in his form as ruler of the northeast — the direction where the sun rises in winter, bringing light after cold. The name carries the blessing of clarity and divine leadership.

ईशानः सर्वविद्यानाम् — Ishana, lord of all knowledge. (From the Shri Rudram)
