Full Meaning
Lakṣmī is the goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and beauty — the consort of Vishnu. She arose from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). Her four hands represent dharma, artha, kāma, and moksha — the four aims of life. She grants both material wealth and spiritual abundance.
Etymology
From lakṣ (लक्ष्) — to perceive, to know, to mark. Also from the root lakṣmī (लक्ष्मी) — "one who is marked with auspicious signs."
Usage in Sanskrit Texts
Lakshmi Puja is performed on Diwali night — the goddess of wealth is invited into every home with lit lamps. Her lotus symbolises spiritual purity rising from material life.
