Varāhamihira: Ancient India's Greatest
Astronomer and Encyclopedist

Varāhamihira lived in Ujjain — then India's astronomical capital — in the 6th century CE (c. 505–587 CE). He was one of the Navaratna (nine gems) of Vikramāditya's court, and the most intellectually wide-ranging scientist of his era. His works span technical astronomy, mathematical astrology, natural history, hydrology, ecology, and encyclopedic natural knowledge — in breadth, comparable only to Pliny the Elder in the Western tradition.

His magnum opus, the Bṛhat Saṃhitā ("Great Compilation"), is 106 chapters covering topics as diverse as the formation of clouds, the behaviour of animals as earthquake predictors, the planting of trees near water sources, and the architectural principles of temples. It is one of the most remarkable encyclopedic achievements of the ancient world.

Astronomy and planetary motion

Detailed descriptions of planetary movements, solar and lunar eclipses, and the precession of the equinoxes. Varāhamihira synthesised Greek, Babylonian, and native Indian astronomical traditions.

Hydrology — finding underground water

Chapters 54–55 describe methods for locating underground water based on plant species, soil colour, and geological features — a practical hydrogeology developed through empirical observation.

Earthquake prediction

Describes the anomalous behaviour of animals, fish, and birds before earthquakes as predictive signs — an observation modern seismology has revisited with serious interest.

Ecology — trees as environmental indicators

Describes the relationship between certain tree species and underground water, the soil types where specific plants thrive, and what the presence of particular species indicates about the local ecosystem.

Meteorology

Systematic descriptions of cloud formations, rainfall prediction, and weather patterns — including the identification of distinct cloud types as predictors of monsoon behaviour.

Pañcasiddhāntikā: Five Astronomical Systems

Varāhamihira's Pañcasiddhāntikā summarises and compares five astronomical traditions — the Sūrya Siddhānta, Pauliśa Siddhānta, Romaka Siddhānta, Vasaiṣṭha Siddhānta, and Paitāmaha Siddhānta. Three of these show Greek influence (Pauliśa from Paulus Alexandrinus, Romaka from Roman/Byzantine sources) — demonstrating that Varāhamihira was actively engaging with and synthesising global astronomical knowledge of his time.

This comparative approach — evaluating multiple systems rather than simply adopting one — reflects a scientific temperament that would be recognisable to modern researchers.
