Vowel Sandhi

सन्धि (sandhi) is not optional knowledge — it is the reason Sanskrit words look different in texts than in dictionaries. रामायण (Rāmāyaṇa) = राम (Rāma) + अयन (ayana — journey): a+a→ā. महर्षि (maharṣi — great sage) = महा (mahā) + ऋषि (ṛṣi): ā+ṛ→ar. महोत्सव (mahotsava — grand festival) = महा (mahā) + उत्सव (utsava): ā+u→o. देवेन्द्र (devendra — king of gods) = देव (deva) + इन्द्र (indra): a+i→e. Without sandhi, you cannot decode even the most famous Sanskrit words. Every shlokas from the ऋग्वेद (Ṛgveda) to the भगवद्गीता (Bhagavad Gītā) uses sandhi on nearly every line. Learning the four main rules makes those blends visible and the language readable.
