अनन्या

Ananya

(ananyā)

Without equal; incomparable; literally "not anyone else"

Full Meaning

Ananyā literally means "not other" — an + anya. There is no one else like this person. The word is used in the Bhagavad Gita (9.22) for devotees who worship with undivided devotion: "ananyāścintayanto māṃ" — "those who think of me without thinking of anyone else." As a name, it means "the one who is incomparable, unique, irreplaceable."

Etymology

An (not) + anya (other, another person) = "not anyone else." Unique, without comparison.

Usage in Sanskrit Texts

The Gita uses ananyā to describe the highest devotion — total, undivided, without looking anywhere else. Named as "incomparable" from the first breath.

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो माम् — Those who worship me with undivided devotion. (Bhagavad Gita 9.22)
