काव्या
Kavya
(kāvyā)Poetry; one who is as beautiful and moving as a poem
Full Meaning
Kāvyā is the Sanskrit word for poetry itself. A kavi (poet) in Sanskrit was also a seer (ṛṣi) — someone who saw truth more clearly than others and gave it form in words. The name says: this person is a poem — something that moves people just by existing.
Etymology
From kavi (poet, seer, wise one) + the feminine suffix. A kavi is "the one who sees" — from ku (earth) + √vid (to see, to know).
Usage in Sanskrit Texts
Sanskrit poetics (kāvyaśāstra) was a complete science. Kālidāsa, the greatest Sanskrit poet, wrote works so beautiful that Goethe read a translation and said: "If I want to name the springtime of heaven and earth in one word — Śakuntalā."
काव्यं यशसेऽर्थकृते — Poetry is for fame, for purpose, for the good of the world. (Kāvyālaṅkāra)
