Dharma — The Word With No English Translation
FreeThe most important Sanskrit word in the world — and why no one language can hold it
धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः ।
dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ |
"Dharma protects those who protect it."
— Manusmṛti 8.15 — c. 200 BCE
Dharma (धर्म) comes from the Sanskrit root √dhṛ — "to hold, to sustain." It is simultaneously: cosmic law, personal duty, ethical action, righteous living, and the force that holds the universe together. English requires seven words to approximate one Sanskrit word. When the Gītā says "follow your dharma," it does not mean "follow your religion." It means: be fully what you are, act in alignment with your deepest nature, do what the universe built you to do — and the universe will protect you in return. This is not morality. It is physics of the soul.
💡 Why this matters today
The reason India has survived 5,000 years of invasions, colonization, and cultural erasure is because dharma is built into its language, its stories, and its daily rituals. You cannot erase a civilization whose core concept is "that which holds everything together."
From √dhṛ = to hold, sustain. Cosmic order. Personal duty. Ethical action. Natural law. The force that holds the universe together — simultaneously.
